Remote-controlled Summa canister sampler
Remote-controlled Summa canister sampler
This sampler is based on the Summa canister with solenoid valves that can be switch on and off remotely to achieve conditional sampling of whole air samples. These samples can then be processed and analyzed following the standard laboratory procedures such as pre-concentration, pre-seperation and gas-chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) or gas-chromatography flame ionization detector (GC-FID) analysis, to obtain detailed information about composition and concentrations of component volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Such information can be crucial in source attribution or emission inventory studies. Combining with the NO, NO2, O3, TVOC and illumination data that can all be measured by the Cambri micro-monitors, it is also possible to carry out mechanistic studies of the chemical processes that lead to the formation of ozone or secondary aerosols.

● The photoionization detector (PID) in the Cambri monitoring station measures the concentration of total volatile organic compounds, which can be used to trigger the opening of the solenoid valve of the sampler when e.g. a preset high threshold value is reached, to collect air samples at high-concentration events that correspond to emissions from a nearby or high-flux source for its emitted VOCs composition analysis;

● This "conditional" sampler can also be used in handling ordor complaints. When one such complaint is raised, the sampler can be triggered to collect the whole air sample for further lab identification of the major ordorous gases within. Joined by further ancillary data, including TVOC concentrations, meteorological ones such as wind speed and direction, and the "fingerprint" VOCs emission spectrum of individual sources, if any, it would be possible to identify the source or cause of the ordor.

The Cambri micro atmospheric monitor can measure multiple air pollutants, including CO, NO, NO2, O3, SO2, TVOC, CO2, PM2.5 and PM10, simultaneously, which can be helpful in source attribution. Moreover, the exceedance of certain preset concentration thresholds in one or more of the above pollutants can also be used to trigger sampling. For instance, VOCs samples from cooking or biomass burning processes can be collected when CO and PM concentrations were used as the trigger, and that from road or off-road natural gas or fuel-powered mobile vehicles can be collected by setting NOx as the trigger. Timed sampling can also be applied to collect samples under high ozone days, to capture the feature / pattern of VOC composition at different regions or times of the day.

Suitable for monitoring activities carried out by national and local environmental protection, meteorological, disease control, and other management departments, scientific research institutions, industrial parks, etc., for real-time monitoring of various environmental parameters.
