Application Case 1:

Tracing the source case of residents' hot-spot complaints

Environmental complaints such as odors and noise have always been thorny issues for management departments to resolve. Through an integrated "monitoring-to-tracing" solution, problems can be accurately and rapidly located, improving work efficiency and quality, and enhancing public trust and satisfaction in the government.

In a residential community in Shanghai, there have been multiple complaints about a "banana water" odor, as well as individual complaints about "kerosene" and "garlic" odors.

The main components of the odors are volatile organic compounds (VOCs), so the focus will be on the impact of area-source emissions of TVOCs near the residential community on its residents.

Continuous monitoring will be conducted 24 hours a day, with a time resolution of minutes, and the monitoring period will be from August 8, 2023, to September 12, 2023.

Two monitoring stations will be set up on the balconies of the residential buildings, one at the pavilion within the community, and one at the guard booth of the steel ball factory opposite the community. The purpose is to monitor the impact of emissions from the steel ball factory on the residential community.

Since the monitoring began, residents of the community have repeatedly reported smelling a strong "banana water" odor. The times when increased TVOC concentrations were detected at the monitoring stations coincided with the times of residents' complaints. The wind direction was mainly southeast.

Around 1 a.m. on August 22, some residents reported smelling a strong "banana water" odor while driving past the entrance of a materials company. The wind direction during the complaint period was consistently southern/southwest.

Combining this information with the map, the source of the odor has been narrowed down to emissions from an automobile repair company or the materials company.
